Vacancies - Royal Society Teaching Fellowships

The Royal Society of New Zealand funds the prestigious New Zealand Science, Mathematics & Technology Teacher Fellowship Scheme which offers teachers the opportunity to take leave with pay from their employing school, be hosted by an organization, and undertake research in an area of interest. Following the return to the classroom teachers are expected to put their knowledge and experience to work in classroom, to stimulate and enthuse their students, their colleagues and the wider community.

The scheme is open to fully qualified practicing primary, intermediate and secondary teachers whose work can be related to science, mathematics, social sciences and technology. Only New Zealand citizens or permanent New Zealand residents are eligible to receive a Fellowship.

We would like to encourage you to apply for a Fellowship to join the Allan Wilson Centre for the period of research. The Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Ecology and Evolution was established as part of the New Zealand government's Centres of Research Excellence Funding initiative and brings together senior researchers from five universities, allowing us to host you at any of these institutions. The Centre comprises world-class evolutionary biologists, mathematicians and ecologists working together to unlock the secrets of our plants, animals and microbes.

If a year in a research environment appeals to you please contact us and we will arrange to meet with you to discuss a possible project. Following discussions we will assist you to complete and submit the application form.

If you would like to talk to us about this opportunity please feel free to contact
Joy Wood on (06) 356 9099 x2303 or e-mail.

Primary Science Teacher Fellowships

The Royal Society of New Zealand will, from 2010, be funding Primary Science Teacher Fellows for a period of 22 weeks. Selected teachers will work on and learn something about the Nature of Science in our communities, and what it is that Scientists actually do.

The identified project will be one of mutual benefit.  These work experiences are not project based as in the other fellowships, but are more work experience focussed. The Primary Fellowships are designed to up-skill teachers to enable them to be better teachers of science – the fellowship also involves curriculum development work, and aims to create potential science curriculum leaders as an outcome.
