About the AWC
The Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Ecology & Evolution is one of New Zealand’s seven Centres of Research Excellence (CoRE). It was established in 2002 under the directorship of Mike Hendy and David Penny. Recognized for its innovative and interdisciplinary research the AWC is hosted by Massey University, and involves principle investigators from the University of Otago, University of Canterbury, Victoria University, Massey University, University of Auckland and the New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research. In 2008 directorship of the AWC transferred to Paul Rainey, with Mike Steel as deputy director. Taking inspiration from the unique ecology and evolution of New Zealand’s native flora and fauna, researchers at the AWC bring a diverse range of skills in mathematical and computational biology, genetics, ecology and evolution to bear on questions of national and international significance, from both applied and fundamental perspectives.
The AWC has strong links with Maori communities and a vibrant outreach programme, which ensures that the outputs of AWC research translate into a form that makes clear the relevance of the AWC’s activities to New Zealand and the lives of New Zealanders.
